Haggai: The Reconstruction Of The Temple:

A Sermon:

Author: Reverend Charles Hayes:

National Minister:

Christians Taking Action, Inc.

Theme: The Reconstruction Of The Temple:

THE BOOK OF HAGGAI: Haggai's basic theme

is clear: the remnant must reorder its

priorities and complete the temple before

it can expect the BLESSINGS OF GOD UPON ITS

EFFORTS:

NOTE 1: The book was written by the prophet

Haggai, whose name means "festive." like

those whom he encouraged, he probably spent

many years in captivity in Babylon before

returning to his native land. He delivered

these messages of encouragement "in the second

year of King Darius" (1:1), a Persian ruler.

This dates his book precisely in 520 B.C.

NOTE 2: Haggai takes us back to one of the

most turbulent periods in Judah's history.

For more than 50 years they were held captive

by the Babylonians. But they were allowed to

return to their native land, beginning about

530 B.C., after Babylon fell to the conquering

Persians:

Topics Include:

I. The Completion Of The Latter Temple:

A. The remnant returns from Babylon

under Zerubbabel:

1. They begin to build the temple of

the Lord.

2. The work soon stops and the people

find excuses to ignore it as the

years pass.

3. They have no problem in building

rich dwellings for themselves.

4. They claim that the time for

building the temple has not

yet come:

B. God withdraws His blessings and they

sink into economic depression because

of their indifference to God.

1. God communicated directly through His

prophet Haggai, Zerubbabel the governor,

Joshua the high priest, and all the people

respond:

2. Twenty-three days later they began to work

on the temple.

II. The Glory Of The Latter Temple:

A. In a few short weeks, the enthusiasm of

the people sours into discouragement:

1. The elders remember the glory of Solomon's

Temple and bemoan the puniness of the

present Temple (See Ezra 3:8-13):

B. Haggai's prophetic word of encouragement

reminds the people of God's covenant

promises in the past, and His confident

plans for the future:

III. The Present Blessings Of Obedience:

A. Haggai's message to the Priests

illustrates the concept of

contamination:

B. The Lord requires holiness and obedience,

and contamination of sin blocks the blessing

of God.

IV. The Future Blessing Of Promise:

A. Haggai addresses the priests:

B. Haggai gives a second message to

Zerubbabel.

1. God will move in judgment.

2. In His power He will overthrow the

nations of the earth:

3. At that time, Zerrubbabel, a symbol

of the MESSIAH TO COME will be honored:
